Why Choose Sway Dance Chicago for Your Wedding Dance Lessons
Personalized, Couple-Focused Instruction
At Sway Dance Chicago, wedding dance lessons are designed for you. Lessons are private and tailored — not one-size-fits-all — meaning you’ll receive personalized guidance that matches your music choice, style, and comfort level. From simple steps to fully choreographed routines, your lessons are shaped around you, not around a classroom curriculum.
Learn at Your Pace — No Experience Needed
Whether it’s your first time dancing or you’ve twirled before, the instructors at Sway make learning fun, stress-free, and accessible. Beginners are welcomed with patience, encouragement, and instruction that builds confidence step by step.
Showcase Your Personality and Style
At Sway, instructors help couples choose music and choreography that reflect who they are — whether that’s a playful swing, romantic rumba, or something unexpected and unique. Your wedding dance should feel personal… and at Sway, that’s a priority.
Flexible Lesson Options & Special Offers
Sway offers a variety of lesson packages — from a few sessions for a simple first dance to more extensive packages for complex choreography. Lessons can also be used for parent dances, bridal party routines, or even just to build general dance confidence before your reception.
A Stress-Free Learning Environment
The welcoming atmosphere at Sway Dance Chicago helps couples relax and enjoy the process. The focus is on fun, connection, and growth — not judgment. For many couples, lessons at Sway become a cherished part of the wedding planning experience.
Wedding Dance Lessons: Why Every Couple Should Say “I Do” on the Dance Floor
Your wedding day is one of the most unforgettable moments of your life — and your first dance together is a highlight guests remember forever. While some couples assume the first dance should be spontaneous, taking wedding dance lessons can transform that moment from nice to truly spectacular.
Why Take Wedding Dance Lessons?
1. Build Confidence and Feel Comfortable Together
Dancing in front of a crowd — even friends and family — can be nerve-wracking if you’re not accustomed to moving as a couple. Professional lessons help you build confidence, so you step onto the dance floor with ease and grace instead of shaking knees.
2. Create a Meaningful Shared Experience
Wedding planning can be stressful. Dance lessons give you a chance to pause planning, laugh together, and make a memory that’s yours — long before the big day arrives. Many couples find that learning their first dance is one of their favorite parts of the engagement journey.
3. Learn Something New Together
Whether you’re a complete beginner or you’ve danced before, lessons help couples develop rhythm, connection, and coordination. This shared achievement adds depth to your relationship and gives you a skill you’ll use again at anniversaries, parties, and other celebrations.
4. Customize a Dance That Reflects Your Story
Couples don’t need a traditional slow waltz — lessons open up the possibility of blending styles, tempos, and choreography that showcase your personalities. From elegant waltzes to playful salsa or swing moments, your first dance can become a performance you’re excited to share.
5. Reduce Stress on the Big Day
Knowing you have a plan for your dance — and that you’ve practiced it — takes a huge load off your shoulders. You won’t be worrying about “what to do” once the music starts playing.
Tips for Couples Before Your Lessons
Start early. Ideally, begin dance lessons about 3–5 months before your wedding. Longer if you’re planning specific choreography.
Practice between sessions. A few short practice sessions at home can make your lessons even more effective.
Choose music that means something. Your song sets the tone for your dance and your routine.

Lesson packages
“Sway was one of the top-rated dance studios we came across in our search for wedding dance lessons and we were not disappointed. They had affordable dance lesson packages and our instructor, Alejandro, was amazing. From the first session we both knew that Alejandro was our guy. He was patient, flexible with scheduling, listened to what we wanted, and taught us dance moves that can go with a variety of music genres. He showed us how to “talk” to each other in the language of dance, which led to us really being comfortable and having fun on the dance floor. The secret of this experience was that Alejandro knew when to focus on teaching us choreography for our wedding dance and when to shake things up with some bachata or Cha-cha. It really helped pull us out of the chaos of wedding planning. We highly recommend Sway and Alejandro if you’re just looking to have a bit of fun on the dance floor or get your wedding dance all squared away.” - S.V.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
This depends on several things:
How much do you want to include in your dance? Are you aiming for just a few basic steps and a simple, elegant ending, or are you dreaming of a full-on Dancing with the Stars routine? Maybe you want to recreate choreography from an iconic NSYNC or Michael Jackson video? (Yes, we’ve done that—and loved every minute of it!) There’s no wrong answer here. We adore sweet and simple, but we also love any excuse to binge-watch Justin Timberlake or replay the final scene of Dirty Dancing to perfect the moves. (And yes, we’ve done that too!)
Do either of you have dance experience?
Everyone learns at their own pace. Some people already have a sense of rhythm, music knowledge, or movement experience—whether it’s from sports, marching band, or even hobbies like golf. You might be surprised how often we compare Waltz to golf, Swing to basketball, and Merengue to marching band drills!
Will you have time and space to practice on your own?
Practicing at home helps your lessons progress more smoothly. The less time we spend reviewing, the more we can focus on learning new material. Plus, practicing together can be a great way to unwind from wedding planning. Set aside the to-do list, pour a glass of wine, clear some space in your living room, and enjoy a few moments in each other’s arms.

Both group classes and private lessons have their advantages, depending on your needs!
Group classes are a fun, social, and economical way to get started. You’ll learn general dance techniques while enjoying the experience with others. Plus, you can get your wedding party involved by taking a group class together for a lively bonding experience!
Private lessons, on the other hand, offer personalized attention. You’ll get individual pointers tailored to your song and specific dance goals, allowing you to focus on perfecting your routine. For a truly custom wedding dance, private lessons are the best option.

We encourage you to choose music that reflects who you are as a couple! Don’t feel limited to a traditional slow song—sometimes a rock anthem or an upbeat track can express your love more authentically. Your music should resonate with you both, so embrace your true musical tastes!
When you come to your first lesson, bring a few music options you're considering. If you have several ideas, your instructor will gladly help you find the one that works best for your dance. And if you’re unsure where to start, check out our extensive list of favorites for inspiration.
Feel free to mix things up! If you’d like to incorporate more than one song, we’d love to help you choreograph a unique combination that tells your story. Imagine starting with a romantic Waltz, transitioning to a playful Swing, and finishing with a show-stopping Salsa!
If there’s one perfect song that captures your relationship but it's longer than you’d prefer, don’t worry—we can edit it to a comfortable length. We recommend keeping most dance songs between 2.5 to 3.5 minutes for the best experience.
-
We recommend starting your dance lessons about four to five months before your wedding. It’s a perfect way to break up the stress of planning with a fun date night! Once your dance is complete, save one or two lessons for the final weeks leading up to your big day. A refresher will help keep everything smooth and stress-free, while giving you both a chance to unwind together.
